Mine clearance

At least 70 million land mines lie buried in 90 countries across the World.

Along with unexploded bombs from wars and conflicts, the mines pose a serious daily threat to the local population. At the same time they act as a hindrance to development, keeping the mine-stricken countries locked in poverty.

Denmark is one of the main contributors to mine clearing in developing countries. Since the Millennium, Denmark has donated more than 70 million Euros to mine clearing in 20 selected countries. One of the Danish

NGOs involved is Dan Church Aid that is presently clearing mines in Albania, Angola, Burundi, DRC, Lebanon and Sudan.

Though many different mine clearance techniques have been developed over the years; the safest and most efficient method remains manually searching mine fields – step by step.

Mine fields are often found in strategically important but difficultly accessible area as mountain passes. In order to clear the mines safely and effectively, it is vitally important to have an updated, highly detailed map of the area.

Sky-Watch has been working in close collaboration with Dan Church Aid to develop a UAV that can be flown over a mine field and map the terrain precisely and detailed.
